PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - Walter Burak

Leduc West is looking at another very busy year for 2003. Our show plans include new events to attract a wider audience. Our event co-ordinator has been very busy arranging for these added attractions. We are hoping to set up more committees this year to undertake projects and report back to the executive. This should alleviate some of the work load.

Several projects are already underway at the park. Our "Jigger Boys" are getting ready to set up a shelter for their cars. The "Feature Tractor" committee is making plans to attract a large number of Rumelys to attend our show. The concession committee is planning for all events rather than individually as many products overlap.

During the winter months we received a large amount of clay fill. Bill Graham and his crew are planning some major road building projects. Plans are underway to connect Vintage Iron Street with the north road. A low spot at the north gate entrance will be filled. A short section of road to the new caretaker residence will be built. An extension of the railroad to the camping area has been discussed; however, it demands a clay fill base and our supply is limited.

One issue that has received much discussion is Compulsory Liability Insurance for all exhibitors at the show. After receiving a fax from our insurance provider "Jubilee Insurance" we had to make a decision on this issue. We have tried to purchase a rider clause from Jubilee Insurance to cover the liability portion for private exhibitors; however, they will not do this . An exhaustive attempt from four insurance brokers has proven unsuccessful. No insurance company wants to provide blanket insurance for private property (which the exhibitors own) when they don't know the individual character, his insurance record, the quality ofthe exhibit and specific details on the exhibit. Basically we are trying to insure anything and anyone in Alberta. Most insurance brokers will provide an extension to your own Homeowners/Farm policy for approximately $50 - $60 dollars to provide the required coverage to protect yourself on Ledue West property. Enclosed are various copies of information regarding this insurance issue:

  1. Fax from Jubilee Insurance
  2. Letter from Transwest Insurance - Leduc
  3. Information regarding the Parades in Leduc, Edmonton, Calgary

One insurance broker we contacted inquired with eight different insurance companies and none would even quote a premium. If anyone is having a problem obtaining liability coverage - a broker in Leduc Marilyn McGhan with Transwest Insurance is willing to assist you with any questions you may have. She can be reached at (780) 980-9803 or you can Email her at McGhanis@shaw.ca

Recently an individual who owns a mobile home has expressed an interest to be our caretaker at the site. He is well known by quite a few members. The executive has interviewed him and unanimously agreed to offer him the position. There is no payment for the position and he will pay for most of the utilities himself. An agreement is being drafted to the satisfaction of both parties. The utility services will be extend to the area. The caretaker residence should be in place before July. Our train station will be turned into a museum building.

Let's hope for another successful year for all our members and for the Society - good health, great finances, new friendships, etc. !! We'll see you all at the events during the year !!!!

Rumely

The Rumelys Are Coming! The Rumelys Are Coming!

As our feature brand for this year's show, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Advance Rumely Thresher Company.

Rumely started out in 1853, producing farm implements, threshing machines, and steam engines. Thanks to the patented Secor-Higgins carburetor, which allowed efficient burning of low-grade fuels, Rumely introduced the first of a successful line of internal combustion tractors in 1908. These tractors proved to be reliable sources of power for everything from breaking virgin prairie to all forms of belt work. Uncommon for the time, Rumely tractors consistently developed more than their rated horsepower, and set new standards for this fledgling industry.

Thanks to their reliability and pulling power, the Rumely line of heavy tractors played a key role in the opening of the Canadian prairies to agriculture. Many fine examples of this famous brand have been preserved for future generations to enjoy, and we hope to be able to present a large selection of them to the public this summer. We at LWAS are proud to celebrate Rumely this year, and we encourage anyone having Rumely equipment or memorabilia to bring them out this July 26th and 27th , and join in the celebration!

Plans are in full swing for the show. The posters are being printed and will be available for pick-up at the May 24th Swap Meet or the Family Picnic on June 1st. We are having 750 printed this year. We will require your assistance in distributing them throughout the province. In spite of the SARS outbreak, Terrorism attacks, the war, Compulsory Insurance for exhibitors, etc. the show will go on !!! We still hope to see a large number of visitors to the Park. Encourage those friends & relatives visiting or camping in the area to participate in our events.

I know some of you are discouraged that Liability Insurance is COMPULSORY for all exhibitors. We have tried our best to contact many Insurance Brokers for Leduc West to cover the exhibits; however, we were not successful. If the exhibit does not belong to LWAS the society becomes responsible and should an accident occur the society will be required to pay. As you all know we don't have that financial security to cover any claims. Therefore, the executive has made a decision that all exhibitors are required to have their own liability insurance. Many of our exhibitors were able to get coverage through their Home/Farm Policy for an additional $50.00.

We realize you spend thousands of dollars restoring your exhibit, several hundred dollars to transport it to the Park, and then we ask you to carry your own insurance. What's in it for you??? I guess the only answer is you get the joyful satisfaction & pride of showing off what you own & have restored. In many cases it may be an artifact that once belonged to your grandfather or father. It's a way of keeping their memory alive.

For us it is much more. We set up the opportunity where the present & future generations can come out to observe history in working demonstrations. Anyone can go to a museum & see tractors, cars, trucks, stationary engines, models, etc; but, to actually see them moving or demonstrating is another story. Part of the curriculum in school is to learn about our heritage. Isn't it better for the children to actually observe artifacts from the past in action !! Also our older generation gets to tell about & relive the days gone by !! I'm sure many of our elderly visitors add years to their lives just by observing this equipment at work. They have something new & exciting to live for to know they are still needed to tell what it was like in the old days.

Now, how about the exhibitors ??? Doesn't your adrenalin get flowing & your heart pumping faster when you actually get that Ford, Lanz, or John Deere started up?? I'm sure it's much better for you than working out in the Gym or walking around the block. Wouldn't you sooner spend several hundred dollars on restoring equipment & showing it than spending hundreds of dollars on a tread mill or exercise bike, or a membership at a gym???

So please don't get discouraged that we ask you to get liability insurance. We appreciate all what you go through to help make our society a success. We thank you & all present & future generations thank you as well. See you all at the show !!!!

I hope you will all submit your Policy Information as soon as possible, as well as, fill out the new vehicle registration form for each new restored exhibit you bring. If you had your exhibit at the Park within the past two years I will have your registration form completed already. I'll just need your signature.

Remember:
Collecting is more fun when you get to share it with others!

NOTE: Wally spoke to the President from another club & they are considering making liability coverage compulsory as well. However, if you feel you have to discuss this with someone please call 986-0054 and we'll give you more background information. It's not our fault that you will have an extra expense; but, we do have broad shoulders !!!

The County Parks & Rec Department is organizing a variety of events for the younger generation at the show. As well we will be having the Petting Zoo both days & possibly the miniature horses.

The Gymkhana will be both days in the corral along with the Tennessee Walker horses.

The Llama Club is expecting quite a number of entrees.

The Rumely Tractors will be involved in various demonstrations.

We hope to see a large turn out of cars, trucks, motorcycles, as well as, many tractors.

Our Data Base has over 300 tractors entered and over 100 cars & 100 trucks. Wouldn't it be great if all of these exhibits came to the show.

Our E-mail indicates visitors coming all the way from Texas & Colorado, as well as, most provinces.

RAFFLE

The tickets are coming in slowly. Hopefully we'll have most of them in by the show. The mailing address is printed right on the tickets. Since it is in very fine print I'll give it again.

KEEP the PARK OPEN on WEEKENDS

We would like to keep the Park open for visitors on the weekends from June to September; but we need your help !! If you can spare one or both days on the weekends to be at the Park from noon to 4:00 pm. we would appreciate your assistance. The job is very easy !! There is an information booklet to help you conduct tours. You will be given a set of keys for the buildings.
Please call 986-0054 if you can help. We have applied for hire a student through the Provincial Government; but, we haven't heard yet if we were successful.

PROJECTS TO DO

  1. Since we received a generous amount of FREE clay this winter concentration will be on road work and perhaps the railroad base to the camping area. This will require a large amount of fuel and many, many hours of work by Bill. If possible we would like to notify the public when work will be done so one can see this massive equipment in operation.
  2. Bill Smith has offered to pay for the material to do the ceiling on the canopy. Schneider's has given us a very good discount. We will require workers to install it.
  3. Gordon Frank has made a generous monetary donation along with donated paint to complete the verandah on the Modeler's building. We need a committee to work with Gordon.
  4. Jim Weiss has offered to build more picnic tables. However, he can't do it alone.
  5. The siding was purchased last year for the bleachers by the concession. We require workers to put it on. We'll still have to purchase the trim.
  6. We have the paint for the corral bleachers. We just need the workers to do it.
  7. There is much cleaning and organizing to be done in the reefer, Jake & the Kid Café, electrical shed, and tool shed.
  8. The windows & floors have to be washed in the school, church, & home. Maybe we could get some volunteers to help the ladies that have looked after those buildings for years.
  9. I'm sure the girls will be out again planting those lovely flowers. It would be nice to extend the water to the front to make it easier to water the flowers.
  10. The concessions need a thorough cleaning, including wiping down the walls & shelves.
  11. The floors on the stages need repair.
  12. The Founders Gallery needs the edges around the floor cleaned. Dust sure builds up during the winter. We need this ready for the May 24th event.
  13. Each year the trees need pruning and dead grass removed from around them.

The Correctional workers will be out several days - on May 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 & 31. They are very nice to work with. It makes it easier if some of our volunteers work along with them. They are also booked for several days in June, July, & September.

KOLLECTOR'S CORNER by Bill Smith

It never ceases to amaze me after collecting for 60 years and looking at the scenery change in collecting. When I was a young fellow it was only prim and proper to collect coins and stamps. Bird watching and horse racing were for the rich and high society. When World War Two came along for 6 years all collecting was put on the back burner. Then in 1946 when the soldiers came marching home they brought souvenirs from far off countries we had only read about in school history books. Such items were taken from prisoners of war, particularly German and Nazi items. Many Canadian foot soldiers had to settle for flags, parts of enemy uniforms and small weapons like daggers. Of course we must not forget money from overseas.

Along came the boom years in the 1950's, everyone had a few extra dollars, materials were again available and new homes sprung up all over. We moved into the era of light coloured woodwork (blond stain), chrome household items was the order of the day from chrome canister sets to chrome kitchen table and chairs, TV came in to replace the old battery bake lite radios. Electricity was fashionable in the farm homes, the dry sink and cistern pump became history with running water. The house with three rooms and a path were soon forgotten. Cars were covered with chrome and got longer and longer, stick shift gave way to automatic transmission. Why cars even had radios now. What will be next?

Farmers had seen the appearance of the combine, soon the self propelled combine appeared and it was not fashionable to use the old lug tractor grandfather used. No, we needed tractors with rubber tires. Horsepower grew by leaps and bounds in tractors and never seem to know their limits to this day. About the middle of the 1940's we purchased our 1st W9 International tractor for a huge sum of $2800.00 The older generation was agas at the size of the tires. This same money would buy a quarter of land.

But getting back to collecting, what is hot and what is not? Suddenly everyone was looking for what grandma and grandpa used to have and likely a lot of these things were thrown in the old well in the back 40. What did they ever do with that old pitcher and basin set, the wall telephone, the old gramophone and just where did their old wood cookstove from the kitchen go?

It was a wise man who weaselled away the old oil lamp, his toys from childhood, and even boyhood clothes. Just last week in the Edmonton Journal it said the Boys Scout Uniform will be no more. It will be replaced by something that a bag lady would wear. Toys were made of metal and are very desirable today. In Toronto's February Toy show a 20 inch long semi truck made of pressed steel in 1950, with good label sold for several hundred dollars. If you had the original box you could throw in a couple more hundred. Pretty scarey when I think of my 1st car, a 1927 model T, low mileage, had sat on blocks through the depression for ten years as the family could not afford to run it, was always under roof and cost me in 1948 a grand total of $50.00. No one wanted it as it had no transmission, just 3 pedals that controlled a band system for direction. I drove it for a year and it cost me the price of gas and oil. I only wish I had it today. It would likely bring $6000 - $8000 dollars. As they say what goes around comes around. So happy hunting this summer, forget the old saying, "It is not a bargain unless you need it".

FIRST DOG SHOW at the PARK

In spite of the cold, snowy weather this past weekend Leduc West saw its first dog show at the Park. Pat Purcell put on an excellent show . There was a good turn out of our canine friends. Some even came all the way from BC. To keep warm Pat & Perry rented a heater to try to take the chill out of the air. In keeping with the theme of our Park events the dogs had their own tractor pull. In the "Canine Weight Pull" Gopher (Pat & Perry's dog) pulled 1250 lbs. Way to go Gopher !! What a winner !! Perhaps a dog show will become a special event at the Park. Somewhere in the future we should have better accommodations. The Llama Association is working on a deal with the UFA. Who knows what will happen in the next five years !!!

MEMBERS of the SOCIETY take to the RODEO

Several members of the society put on their cowboy boots & hats and pitched in to give a helping hand to the Rodeo Association this past weekend. It was a wonderful weekend. We met many new friends & got to visit with old friends. Wally, Elmer, Dallas, Ron, Danin, & Larry were security guards, while, Marilyn, and I sold 50/50 tickets for all three days. On Saturday Bill Smith set up a beautiful display of antiques at the Country Fair and we sold our raffle tickets. Norm had the 1928 Model A Ford out for its first spin in 2003 in the Leduc Black Gold Rodeo Parade. Members of the Rodeo Association will be helping us at our show.

SPONSORS

We are looking for more Sponsors to assist with the funding of our July show. Most organizations go from business to business to get financial help. Rather than doing that I would like to ask you to please help out. If you know of anyone who would like to donate $50 - $100 - $500 or more to assist with some of the expenses we would be very grateful. If advertising isn't involved we can issue a tax receipt. If advertising is involved they are welcome to display signage at the Park during the event. Many of you are still working for larger companies or have friends or children with larger companies that maybe would be willing to help. Since we never know what the weather is going to be like at the show (as this affects our attendance) we really don't want a large deficit on our hands. So if we could get sponsorship for the major expenses it would be a real relief We already have five Corporate Sponsors who donate over $1000 each. We are very thankful to them. Let's all work together and I'm sure we can come up with several thousand more.

REMINDERS: Call 986-0054 for more information.

Subject: Leduc West Antique Society

With regards to your additional named insured, the Leduc West Antique Society. Liability coverage.

Privately owned tractors with no storage on Society grounds.

The society hosts a yearly show the last weekend in July, July 26 & 27, 2003. Private collectors invited to bring their own restored antiques tractors to display and participate in the societies events such as the parade, tractor sled events, field plowing, and other agricultural related activities. Some tractor owners do not have a homeowners liability policy or any other insurance coverage. The tractors show up for 2 or 3 days and then are removed from the society grounds, usually transported on tandem carriers back home. While the tractor is on society grounds it is operated and in control of the individual owners and not the society.

No concern is with the owners coverage but only concerned with liability covering the general public who are spectators at the show or property damage to other owners equipment or possessions.

Our liability policy will be there to defend & make payment for the society for anything that the courts find the "society" legally liable for, that does not necessarily mean that there is coverage for the owner/operator of the tractor should he run over a spectator. There will also be no coverage for the tractors if the owner/operator of the tractors run into one another. They will be self insuring that risk if they don't carry a farm/homeowners policy with coverage extended to their equipment. And as mentioned above they are also self insuring the their legal liability if they don't carry a policy for their farms, equipment or homes. My answer to you yesterday remains the same in that the courts are the only jurisdiction to impose the legal liability and to determine who is liable and how much of the judgment they are liable for. My advise to you would be to advise the farmers to take out a farm policy for at least farm liability, it is their choice to insure the tractor itself. If the owner/operator of the tractor is allowed to participate in the societies events knowing that they don't carry any liability coverage of their own, the courts could rule that the society is liable for all judgments.

It may be a good idea for the owners of these tractors contact their insurer to advise of this special event that they are going to be participating in to confirm the coverage is not excluded from their policy.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks,
Holly

MEMO/FAX

Date: May 5, 2003
RE: Leduc Antique Society
TO: Walter Burak @ 986-0902

Dear Mr. Burak:

Please forgive me for such a late response to your questions. I have been just so busy, it has been difficult to find time for much of anything.

With regard to questions about carrying liability on behalf of your members to protect the public attending functions at the Leduc Antique Society site or at a function sponsored by the Leduc Antique Society the following should be considered:
- All persons participating in your events should certainly carry their own personal liability to protect their activities on or off the site. A lot of people get upset thinking they must purchase more insurance, but that is not the case. Personal liability is a part of your liability carried on your home, condo, tenant or farm package policies. As long as the person is just collecting/keeping antiques as a hobby there is no problem.
- Those persons showing, buying, selling or trading for profit on a constant basis would not qualify to be covered under their personal liability. They should speak to their individual agent/s to be sure they can obtain the coverage.
- If the Society insures everyone's activities, you soon will not have coverage for your own group. I would not recommend this type of action
- Requiring signed documentation and/or a release from each participant confirming they carry personal liability and accept responsibility for their actions in having their antiques on display should be sufficient for your records. That could be implemented within an entry form. We have to do it for every other event sponsored by a non-profit group so there should not be too much difficulty is asking for this.
- If you ask for each and every person to produce a copy of their insurance, you will start a paper jungle and who would you have determine if the document is authentic. Also the insurance companies/agents involved would have to start charging for the added paperwork being requested.

I trust this is useful information. Should you require anything further, please call.

Sincerely
TRANSWEST INSURANCE - LEDUC
